LET'S START COUNTING!

Florence, Duomo, 2010: A light-weight fiberglass replica of the David is placed in the originally designated spot —to create an intriguing temporary effect that never was.

1501-4:  Michelangelo sculpts a monumental marble David to surmount a buttress at Florence Cathedral: 1

Florence, Piazza della SIgnoria; the annual festival of Saint John the Baptist (24 June). The original David is indicated by the red arrow. (Giovanni Stradano, 1561-62, fresco from the Sala di Gualdrada in Palazzo Vecchio.)

1504:  Instead, the David was placed in front of the Palazzo Vecchio, where it remained for three-and-a-half centuries: 2

Woodcut by Giuseppe Barberis from Gustavo Strafforello’s La patria, geografia dell'Italia. Provincia di Firenze (Turin, 1894).

1871:  A bronze replica of the David was embedded in a merry mash-up of a monument in Piazzale Michelangiolo (high above the city), flanked by the artist's Four Times of Day from the New Sacristy at San Lorenzo: 3

MEANWHILE:

Florence, August 1873, at the intersection of Piazza della SIgnoria and Piazzale degli Uffizi; shifting Michelangelo's five-ton marble statue.

In 1873, the original David was transferred to the Accademia Gallery...

...but did not go on view for nine years.

Also in 1873, a marble replica of the David was placed in front of the Palazzo Vecchio to substitute the missing original.

Now picking up where we left off in PIAZZALE MICHELANGIOLO:

2009: Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, an Asian visitor is photographed while imitating an imitation of Michelangelo's David : 4

In turn, the guy who did The David Thing photographed the guy who photographed him: 5

Meanwhile, they were both secretly photographed by another photographer —with these images to prove it: 6

ALSO:

Florence, Piazzale Michelangelo with local collectibles: to the left, tote bags with the David looming over Palazzo Vecchio and the head of Botticelil's Venus; to the right, Pinocchietti of every sort and a rack of David undershorts.

If you want, we could run through another series of fateful encounters working back from the garment below.

But ...if you don't mind... maybe some other time?
