1501-4:  Michelangelo sculpts a monumental marble David to surmount a buttress at Florence Cathedral: 1

1504:  Instead, the David was placed in front of the Palazzo Vecchio, where it remained for three-and-a-half centuries: 2

1871:  A bronze replica of the David was enshrined in a merry mash-up of a monument in Piazzale Michelangiolo (high above the city), flanked by the artist's Four Times of Day from the New Sacristy at San Lorenzo: 3

MEANWHILE:

In 1873, the original David was transferred to the Accademia Gallery...

‍

...but did not go on view for nine years.

‍

Also in 1873, a marble replica of the David was placed in front of the Palazzo Vecchio to substitute the missing original.
